Samaj Pragati Sahayog

 Senior Programme Officer

About Organisation:

Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) has been engaged in various community development initiatives including water conservation, efficient use of water, sustainable livelihoods, health & nutrition and promotion of community-based institutions for almost three decades.

Self Help Groups (SHGs) form the bedrock of all of SPS’ work. Most of the members of these SHGs belong to the marginalised – poor, Adivasi, Dalits, landless and displaced people. These disadvantaged women learn to run their own series of nested institutions – SHGs, Cluster Development Associations (of 15-20 SHGs)and Federations(of around 200 SHGs). The SHG and livelihood programmes complement each other ,and their simultaneous implementation is the key to poverty alleviation. Incomes raised through livelihood initiatives need to be saved. It is they who ensure that these savings are, in turn, diligently reinvested in livelihood options that raise incomes, and health and education of the family, setting up a virtuous cycle.
